CF8 and MYSQL5

I was working on a system using CF8.01 and MYSQL 5 and getting intermittant inexplicable "null pointer errors" on many of my calls to component methods that contained queries. After applying a CFTRY/CATCH to some test code I got an "Error Executing Database Query. No operations allowed after connection closed" error. After researching the errors I found two solutions:

1. Uncheck "Maintain connections" in the datasource
2. Put this in the connection string for the datasource: jdbc:mysql://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:PORT/databasename?autoReconnect=true

So far everything in my system seems to be working fine. Next step is to figure out whether both of these settings are really needed (or whether I just need one of them).
